Designing sounds

Textile podcast

Our podcast focuses on upholstery fabrics for public environments. The discussions revolve around creating sensory rooms using form and function. We ask ourselves how we should think and what we should do to feel good. Answers come from interior designers, researchers, and designers.

In the first three episodes, we talk about sound. How it affects us, what acoustic challenges exist in workplaces, and how we can create good environments with the help of textiles. For example, you get an insight into how offices are transformed and why a mobile phone call is one of the most disturbing things there is.

Listen to the podcast below or find it elsewhere where podcasts are available.

1. How we are affected by sound

Part 1 of our sound series provides answers on how we humans are affected by sound. What happens to our senses when we are exposed to different tones? Does sales increase if we play well-known songs? And how can textiles help us create good acoustics?

Participants:
Pernilla McGillivray, textile designer
Martin Ljungdahl Eriksson, researcher in informatics
Victoria Malmberg, PR and communications consultant

2. Future workplaces

Part 2 of our sound series focuses on future workplaces. We offer trend insights and reflect on how offices are transforming. Are web meetings here to stay? What effects will it have? And why is a mobile call one of the most disruptive things in a workplace?

Participants:
Johanna Augustsson, interior architect
Pernilla McGillivray, textile designer
Martin Ljungdahl Eriksson, researcher in informatics
Victoria Malmberg, PR and communications consultant

3. The optimal sound environment

Part 3 of our sound series is about the optimal sound environment. Does it even exist? If so, how is it created? We talk about activity-based rooms where individual needs are in focus and the balance between the beautiful and the practical.

Participants:
Johanna Augustsson, interior architect
Pernilla McGillivray, textile designer
Martin Ljungdahl Eriksson, researcher in informatics
Victoria Malmberg, PR and communications consultant

More than just silence

The sound environment affects us more than we think – and for many, it is introduced too late in room design. Here we highlight how sound, form, and humans interact, and why a broader perspective is necessary for sustainable and functional environments.

How the sound environment affects our experience

The sound environment is never just background noise – it is shaped by the room, the activity, and the people there. Here we explore how different factors affect our experience and what you, as a designer or responsible person, can do to create a sound environment that both feels and functions well.

Experiences in the sound environment

The sound environment affects how we feel, think, and work. At the same time, the visual framework and the context itself will in turn affect how we perceive the sound environment. It is therefore a complex interplay between the senses, and precisely what Designing sounds is all about.

A clear idea of the environment one wants to create

What shapes a sound environment, and what significance do the visual elements have? To gain a design perspective on the question, we had a conversation with the design department at Svensson.

Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment

In a time when our senses are constantly overwhelmed by information, it becomes increasingly important to understand how different sensory impressions, such as sound and visual design, can work together to create a balanced and healthy environment. Textiles offer unique opportunities to enhance the sound environment, regulate light impressions, and create flexible spaces that contribute to increased well-being and focus for students and school staff.

Construction and testing

In the same way that a sunshade transmits, reflects, and absorbs different proportions of light, a curtain does the same with sound.

Classification

A product's ability to absorb sound determines its sound absorption coefficient. It can range from 0.0, which means no absorption, to 1.0, which is total absorption.
